Local Amenities

The Glenelg Shop is open Monday to Saturday and is remarkably well stocked with a variety of groceries, fruit & veg, bread & milk, and daily papers. Lindsey and Ben run a pre-order service. There are several small grocery stores and a larger Co-op store in Kyle of Lochalsh.

The community-run ferry to Skye operates April to October and has a cafe and gift shop at the Shore Station. The local craft beer Dun Brewing is made and served in Glenbeag, near the second Broch, Dun Troddan.

The Glenelg Inn has a great atmosphere, huge log fire, good bar meals as well as a lovely restaurant (please check opening in Winter).

 

 

Some Activities in the Area

In Glenelg there is a childrens playground, football field, Community Hall (ceilidhs,etc), shingle beaches (1 minutes walk away), huge sand beach (20 mins walk/1 mile), kayak and small boat launching, river and sea fishing.

The ruined Bernera barracks provide a brooding reminder of the Jacobite era.

Go ‘over the sea to the Isle of Skye’ on the traditional Glenelg-Kylerhea community owned ferry (1 mile-summer only).

A magical coastal area that includes the site of Gavin Maxwell’s ‘Camusfearna’ at Sandaig with its islands and white coral beaches (4 miles)

Glenbeag has some of Scotland’s best preserved Iron Age brochs (3 miles); it is beautiful glen with its shallow river and impressive waterfall - lovely for a relatively gentle bike ride and very fresh salads at the yurt / wagon cafe by Dun Troddan.

Close by are formidable Munros including Beinn Sgritheall and the Five Sisters of Kintail and spectacular waterfalls such as Falls of Glomach ; also wild Knoydart.

Arnisdale Ferry from Arnisdale or Corran to the Knoydart wilderness area (9 miles).

Pony trekking at Shiel Bridge (9 miles).

Llama trekking at Ault a’ chruinn (10 miles)- you don’t ride them, they carry your bags and provide interesting companionship.
